Ghana

Ghana has the dual appeal of being somewhere that I’ve wanted to visit along with being somewhere I have a legitimate work interest in visiting. The chance to work expense some travel costs and gain a deeper insight into the country’s culture is a decent drawcard for me.

Malawi

Known as “The Warm Heart of Africa”, Malawi offers very good value and its famed friendliness extends to SA passport holders. Lake Malawi is somewhere I’ve been wanting to go to for about 20 years. Riding the Inyala Ferry or its replacement is a Bucket Lister!

Tanzania

Tanzania has been elusive. I got as far as getting a yellow fever card and visa (we needed them in 2010), but never made it past Mozambique. I like the idea of the Tazara Express and of course Zanzibar. If I feel fit enough, maybe I can even get that Kili selfie haha!

Kenya

Much like Ghana, Kenya is somewhere that would also be good for me for my work. My initial impression of Kenya is that it caters mostly for higher-end tourists, but I’m sure cheaper options can be found, especially if just living and working there.

Mozambique

I really enjoy Mozambique. I tested the digital nomad waters there all the way back in 2010, living almost directly under the country’s second 3G mast in Tofo near Inhambane. A return is long overdue and Strab at the end of May is a great music festival that’s always recommended.

Zambia warrants some more research. I’ve recently been reminded that it’s accessible via Namibia and I’ve also always liked the idea of the Tazara Express, which is a weekly train that runs from Lusaka to Dar es Salaam and back. Much more info to follow …

Namibia allows 90 days of visa-free travel for South Africans with a return ticket. (Not too sure how that works if arriving overland.) Namibia is easily accessible and, as I only recently realised, it offers a viable route into Zambia. More to follow…

South Africa

I’m looking at foreign shores, but there’s much to be said for working from the Transkei, Hogsback or deep in the Karoo. And of course Cape Town is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. I may add to this one day, but for now I’ve added it for easier cost comparisons.
