Turkey

Spanning Asia and Europe, Turkey is rich in history and a modern melting pot. Although I’ve never been, I’ve written for a Turkish news agency from Cape Town and I spent hours gazing at the Turkish shoreline while working on Cypriot cruise liners (the Cypriots don’t like the Turks, so we never docked, sadly).Â

Visas

South African passport holders can apply for a 30-day visa online via evisa.gov.tr.

Getting there

Flights from Cape Town To Istanbul go for about R13.6K. Prices will vary at different times of the year, but Turkish Airlines is pushing Istanbul as a major travel hub.

Places

Istanbul, or Constantinople if you’re well behind the times.

Costs

The various cost of living indices and sites show Turkey as substantially cheaper than SA, but I have heard that Istanbul can be quite pricey for tourists. More info to follow…

Highlights

The Turkish coastline looks great. With Istanbul as a growing travel hub, it could be a viable stopover on the way to somewhere else.
