Georgia

Georgia absolutely deserves a mention, even if only for the fact that it is the only country to offer a full year’s stay without a visa. It’s a little pricier than SA, but that’s to be expected for Europe. This definitely warrants more investigation, but I’d rather Russia was more peaceful.

Ghana

Ghana has the dual appeal of being somewhere that I’ve wanted to visit along with being somewhere I have a legitimate work interest in visiting. The chance to work expense some travel costs and gain a deeper insight into the country’s culture is a decent drawcard for me.

  • Visas: 90 days per year visa-free for SA
  • Flights: CT – Accra return from R14K
  • Currency: R1 = 0.65 Ghanaian Cedi
  • Costs: Numbeo 28.5 | WData 27 | 36% < SA

India

India is cheap and accessible, with reportedly excellent connectivity. The best times for travel are October to March, but I’m heading there from mid March to late April, starting off in Arambol in Goa and then making my way to Rishikesh in the foothills of the Himalayas.

Malawi

Known as “The Warm Heart of Africa”, Malawi offers very good value and its famed friendliness extends to SA passport holders. Lake Malawi is somewhere I’ve been wanting to go to for about 20 years. Riding the Inyala Ferry or its replacement is a Bucket Lister!

  • Visas: 90-day stay upon entry
  • Flights: R12K+ from CT (can overland)
  • Currency: R1 = 90.45 Kwacha
  • Costs: 35% < SA

Peru

Peru is not only home to Machu Picchu, one of my long-term Bucket Listers, but Cuzco has been highly recommended to me as a place with a vibrant nomad community. Getting there from SA is a bit complicated and costly, but it looks good for a long stay.

Tanzania

Tanzania has been elusive. I got as far as getting a yellow fever card and visa (we needed them in 2010), but never made it past Mozambique. I like the idea of the Tazara Express and of course Zanzibar. If I feel fit enough, maybe I can even get that Kili selfie haha!

Kenya

Much like Ghana, Kenya is somewhere that would also be good for me for my work. My initial impression of Kenya is that it caters mostly for higher-end tourists, but I’m sure cheaper options can be found, especially if just living and working there.

  • Visas: 30-day stay upon arrival
  • Flights: R7.5K+ Nairobi | R10K+ Mombasa
  • Currency: R1 – 8.58 Kenyan shilling
  • Costs: Numbeo 28.9 | WD 39.4 | 32% < SA

Indonesia

I’ll admit that I nearly made the common mistake of listing this as Bali, but Bali is just one of several large Indonesian islands. Bali itself is a popular nomad destination but I must research it and the other islands further. Also a home to monkey temples!

Mozambique

I really enjoy Mozambique. I tested the digital nomad waters there all the way back in 2010, living almost directly under the country’s second 3G mast in Tofo near Inhambane. A return is long overdue and Strab at the end of May is a great music festival that’s always recommended.

  • Visas: 30-day stay upon entry
  • Flights: overland is much cheaper
  • Currency: R1 = 3.38 Mozambican metical
  • Costs: 28% > SA

Cambodia

Monkey temples! Do I really need to say more than that? Cambodia also offers great value for money along with close access to other similarly cheap SE Asian countries. Much more information to follow, but let me repeat, monkey temples!

Vietnam

Vietnam is another SE Asian country with potential and promise. I had at one point looked at it fairly seriously as a place to go and teach English after completing a TEFL course in the wake of Covid, but I’d rather keep doing what I already do while there.

Panama

Famed for a hat and a canal, Panama has been a popular destination for South Africans seeking a second residency or passport somewhere that still feels a bit wild. Panama wasn’t one of my first thoughts, but I have good friends moving there and I’d love to visit.

  • Visas: None, 180 days for SA passport
  • Flights: R20K+ to Panama City
  • Currency:
  • Costs: 51% > SA
